| 1. When you add patterns to a dress with many folds, and with a lot of different directions and creases, the pattern often makes the shading and folds look flat. For a more realistic look and to enhance the depth and movement of the dress, the pattern needs to follow the dress. |
2. Start by creating a new layer. Choose a colour that stands out from the dress and fill every other fold and crease. |
| |
| 3. Make yet another new layer and fill other areas of the dress. |
4. Make a third layer and fill the rest of the dress. |
| |
5. Make sure the three layers do not overlap each other because that will mess up the pattern. |
6. Now you choose the pattern. Add three layers of the same pattern, one for each colour (purple, green and orange). |
| |
| 7. For the pattern that will cover the purple area I've rotated the pattern slightly to the right. Go to Edit > Transform > Rotate, and then move the pattern. All three pattern pieces need to be in different places or directions. |
8. Select the purple layer, go back to the pattern layer and remove all the area outside of the selection. |
| |
| 9. Turn the purple layer invisible. The pattern should now only be visible on parts of the dress. |
10. Do the same thing with the green and the orange, but turn the green slightly to the left instead, and keep the orange as it is. Once you've done that you should have three layers of pattern pieces all in different directions. Merge the pattern layers together. |

| 11. The pattern doesn't do much for the dress as it is. Go to the layer option and try out the different effects such as Multiply or Overlay. A good idea is to change the Opacity a bit so that the pattern blends with the dress better. Changing the pattern colour can look pretty nice too. |
12. Here I've done the same steps that I've just explained but with a squared pattern instead. Squared patterns often make a dress look very flat and even with using three different pattern layers it still look sort of flat. For a better result use more pattern layers all in different directions. |
