Checkered belt tutorial
This tutorial is for Photoshop 5.0, but works in other versions of Photoshop as well.

1. Start by drawing the shape of the belt on a new layer. If you want a black belt it's better to start with a dark gray colour instead of black. Use the Dodge and Burn tools to darken and lighten the belt just slightly. 2. Create a new layer, and start drawing the checked pattern with the Paintbrush tool. I've chosen a brush size 3. 3. Continue to fill the entire belt.

4. Activate the belt layer and select the area outside the belt by using the wand tool. Activate pattern layer and go to Edit > Clear to remove the pattern outside of the belt. 5. Sharpen the pattern. 6. Hold down Ctrl and click on the layer in the layer window. The pattern should now be selected. Delete the pattern layer. With the selection still intact, activate the belt layer and copy and paste. That will give you a cutout of the belt, shaped like the checked pattern.

7. Go to Image > Adjust > Brightness/Contrast.
Add Brightness: +30 and Contrast: +70.
8. Draw a buckle. 9. Done!
